I talk a lot about being determined, focused, working hard, and reaching for your dreams,. However there is one overarching theme that should never be forgotten. In fact this should be our primary motivation.
What is it? Love!
If you are in a service industry, love the people you serve even if your industry/ job/ working conditions are less than perfect.
When I was practicing primary care, I loved my patients to bits even as I bemoaned the imperfections in the corporatized healthcare system that I worked in. As a full time coach, I love my clients. As a public speaker, I go with love to events that I am invited to.
People talk about my “work ethic”, lot. If I did not love the people that I serve my work ethic would probably have fizzled out. When I left my last job one of my staff said to me, as I was thanking them for their hard work: “We work hard because you work hard.”
I did not look at it as working hard, I always thought that because I wanted the best for my patients, I would do everything I could to help them achieve the best.When you love those you serve, you serve with gladness: You become a source of joy for others when you operate in love.
When you love those you serve, you go over and above: you help others with glad sacrifice.
When you love those you serve, you bring your A-game to the table: you bring the best resources of yourself, not doing things by halves.
When you love those you serve, their wins are your wins: you do not compete with your clients/customers/community.
When you love those you serve, you will fight for their progress.
When you love those you serve, you are serving GOD: Beloved, let us love one another. For love is of God and anyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He that does not love, does not know God, for God is love. (1st John 4:7)
